Japan is not very well known as a walking location, yet it must be one of the best countries in the world for those who enjoy mountain walks, with challenging alpine hikes and dramatic volcanic scenery. In addition, there are plenty of opportunities for easier walks, combining countryside routes with walks through villages, shrines and temples. This collection of walks gives a cross section of what is available for hikers, with some personal reflections.
A three-week holiday in July 2003 became the inspiration for the Walking Stories project (see Who set it up and Why?). This introductory page provides background on what it's like visiting Japan for walking and hiking holidays.
