Hidden away in the Himalayas is the small Buddhist kingdom of Bhutan, which attracts very few outsiders.
However, now it's beginning to change, as this superb story by Tishani Doshi indicates. Published in the Guardian of 19 May 2007 it describes a visit to the capital, Thimphu, and a 4-day trek of 45 km, reaching 3750m. The route went through the forested Paro valley past villages, shrines and monasteries, with local people showing their traditional hospitality and friendliness to travellers.
